muddy spikes

First post!

"HBFS" stands for "Harder, better, faster, stronger," which is a lyric from a Daft Punk song that has recently been sampled by Kanye West in his song, "Stronger."

People call me JV.  I'm a twenty-year-old college sophomore attending a rigorous liberal arts college in southeastern Pennsylvania.  I'm a native of Michigan.  I'm majoring in biology, looking to go to graduate school for exercise science.

I've been running cross-country since I was in the sixth grade and track and field since seventh.  I run for my college's cross-country and track and field teams.  We're division III and not very good... I'm not the most talented athlete, but I've worked incredibly hard for the last ten years, and I've posted some decent PRs on the track.  I'm learning how to steeplechase, and I think steeplechase just might be the best event ever.

I plan to blog about my thoughts on training and racing, share stories about significant races, training runs, share my goals and fears, and hope to experience the camaraderie of a group of passionate runners!  I hope to race longer distances (half-marathons, marathons) when my collegiate career ends.

The muddy shoes in my icon are from NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals in 2006.  About 200m of the 6k course were still covered with grass - the other 5800 were total slop!  My time was pretty horrendous, but the experience was one I'll never forget!
